It's Fall in Houston: Pet Care Tips:Essential Wellness for Dogs and Cats

Fall Means Essential Wellness for Dogs and Cats

As the seasons change, so do your pet’s grooming and wellness needs. At Heights Grooming, we believe in Essential Wellness, a proactive approach to keeping your pets healthy, comfortable, and looking their best all year long.

Fall is a season of cozy walks, cooler weather, and fresh starts. Here’s what every pet parent should know this time of year:

1. Shed Happens — Prepare for the Coat Change

Even short-haired pets experience seasonal shedding in the fall as their coats adjust to cooler weather. Regular grooming removes dead hair, reduces matting, and keeps your home cleaner. A professional brush-out or de-shedding treatment helps your pet’s coat stay soft and healthy.

Cat parents, this applies to you, too! Our grooming team now includes professional cat groomers, so your beloved feline family members can enjoy the same care and comfort as your pups.

2. Skin and Coat Care for the Cooler Months

As humidity drops, pets can experience dry, itchy skin. Gentle moisturizing shampoos, conditioner rinses, and nourishing paw treatments help keep skin balanced and coats shiny.

Ask us about our Blueberry Facial or paw balm treatments, perfect for keeping your pet fresh and hydrated through the dry fall air.

3. Fall Allergies Are Real

Many pets experience seasonal allergies to pollen, mold, or ragweed. Regular grooming removes allergens from the coat and skin, helping to reduce itchiness and irritation. If your pet is licking or scratching more than usual, let us know, and we will tailor their grooming service to support relief and comfort.

4. Keep Up the Schedule

Fall routines can get busy, but consistent grooming is key to maintaining your pet’s wellness. Regular visits allow us to monitor your pet’s coat, skin, nails, and overall condition—small issues can be caught early, keeping your pet feeling their best.

5. Safety and Comfort on Cooler Days

Longer coats might mean more comfort outside, but don’t forget about paw care! Cooler weather brings wet leaves and debris that can mat fur between the toes. A professional trim and cleaning will prevent irritation and slipping.

Heights Grooming is now proudly offering professional cat grooming services again. From de-shedding and trims to nail care and hygiene maintenance, we’re here to make your feline’s grooming experience calm, safe, and beneficial for their health.

Thanksgiving is a time for food, family, and gratitude, but not every part of the feast is safe for your furry family members. At Heights Grooming, we believe every pet deserves to enjoy the season in comfort, health, and style. With only 13 salon days left before Thanksgiving, now’s the time to plan so your pet looks and feels their best before the guests (and the gravy) arrive. Keep the Feast on the Table—Not in the Bowl Many traditional Thanksgiving foods can upset your pet’s stomach or even be toxic. Keep the following off their menu: ● Turkey skin, bones, and gravy: Fatty and hard to digest; cooked poultry bones are particularly hazardous because they are brittle, can splinter and cause injury. ● Stuffing and casseroles: Onions, garlic, and heavy seasonings can be toxic to both dogs and cats. ● Raisins, grapes, and chocolate: Highly poisonous, even in small amounts. ● Xylitol-sweetened desserts: Found in sugar-free treats, it’s extremely dangerous and potentially deadly. Instead, offer yummy and pet-safe snacks like plain pumpkin purée, green beans, or a small piece of unseasoned turkey breast. Calm Pets, Happy Guests Thanksgiving gatherings can be loud and overwhelming, especially for sensitive pets! Plan to: ● Exercise earlier in the day to burn off energy. ● Keep a quiet space ready with their bed, toys, and water bowl so they can relax. ● Use calming sprays or chews if your pet tends to be anxious around guests. A calm pet makes for calmer company (and better family photos!). Finally, remember to secure trash: Secure garbage bins with tight lids to prevent pets from accessing dangerous leftovers like turkey bones or packaging. Get Photo-Ready for the Holiday From cozy family portraits to group selfies at the dinner table, you know the cameras will be out. A fresh groom or bath brings out your pet’s natural shine, eliminates odors, and makes those photos frame-worthy. ● A Blueberry Facial brightens their face for photos. ● A nail trim and paw treatment keep paws healthy and slip-free on hardwood floors. ● A brushing or de-shedding treatment keeps coats soft and manageable. There are only 13 salon days left before Thanksgiving! Appointments fill quickly, don’t miss your pet’s holiday-ready groom. Remember to schedule your pre-holiday grooming before guests arrive! Or call/text 713-489-2643 to reserve your spot. Essential Wellness, Holiday Edition Our groomers aren’t veterinarians, but they play an important role in your pet’s overall wellness. Through coat, skin, ear, and paw care, we help you spot changes early, because looking good and feeling good go hand in hand. This Thanksgiving, we’re grateful for the pets (and people!) who make Heights Grooming such a special place. Thank you for being a cherished member of our community! We will host our fun holiday event, Sip-n-Santa, again in December. Santa will be ready for your holiday photos, and we'll all enjoy tasty beverages and treats. Stay tuned, the date will be announced soon! Our philosophy at Heights Grooming is simple: grooming is a vital component of your pet's overall wellness, similar to veterinary and dental care. Our groomers are not just stylists; they are skilled professionals trained in the unique structure of Doodle hair, which is prone to specific health issues when not properly maintained. Grooming is essential pet care, not a luxury, it's about health, not just style. Learn about the top three myths about Doodles and their coats. MYTH 1: Doodles are part Poodle; they are hypoallergenic and don't shed. Reality: There is no such thing as a 100% hypoallergenic dog. Doodles inherit a mix of traits from their parent breeds, which can include the shedding tendencies of the shedding parent. Doodles do shed, but the curly Poodle-like coat often traps the shed hair rather than releasing it, which is what gives them the reputation of being "non-shedding." The trapped hair can quickly form painful mats if not brushed out regularly. MYTH 2: Doodles are low-maintenance and don't need regular grooming. Reality: A Doodle's coat is actually high-maintenance and requires consistent grooming and care. Daily brushing with a slicker brush and a metal comb helps prevent mats and tangles, ensuring you reach down to the skin. In addition to at-home care, regular professional grooming is required to keep your Doodle healthy. MYTH 3: It's okay to let a Doodle's coat air-dry after a bath or swim. Reality: Allowing a Doodle's damp coat to air-dry is one of the quickest ways to create severe matting. Water causes small tangles to tighten, and if not thoroughly dried and combed, these tangles turn into large, painful mats (or pelts) that can only be removed by shaving the dog.
